Each year the VUSD GATE department coordinates the district's Novel Knowledge reading incentive program that encourages students in grades 4-6 to read novels and compete in a trivia-game style competition.
A district-wide committee selects the eight books each year. Students are encouraged to form teams and sign up through their school libraries in December, and then start reading. Quiz matches are arranged in early fall so that each school can select a winning team to participate in the District Championship.
