March, 2013, Parent Education Forum

More than 200 people attended the EL Department's Family Math Day at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in early March, 2013. The event brought math activities and games (in both English and Spanish) to the families in the Parent Education Forums at the church. The department brought together 80 volunteers including 50 UC Davis student teachers and students from both Vacaville High School & Will C Wood to help translate.
A grant from Kaiser funded a large lunch, prepared and served by many retired VUSD teachers; Delta Kappa Gamma sponsored a book give away to children who visited at least 4 math centers.
This was one of the most successful events by the group. Families were choosing to stay at the math centers rather than eat lunch or go off to baseball practice or basketball games. Not only were the children engaged but the parents were as well. The EL Department is very grateful to all of the volunteers for their enthusiastic support, planning and organization!

Transitional Kindergarten program set to expand

After a successful first year, our Transitional Kindergarten program is set to expand next year, possibly adding more classes at more schools. The TK program is the first year of a two-year kindergarten experience for children who miss the age cut-off for regular kindergarten due to new state laws. TK classes feature a modified curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate for younger students.

This year, children entering regular kindergarten next year must turn 5 years old by October 1, 2013. The TK program is available to children who turn 5 between October 2 and December 2.

To enroll a child in either traditional or transitional kindergarten, register at your school of residence. Enrollment information and school boundary maps can be found on the home page of each elementary school web site.

Tdap Booster Shot Information

Each year, all VUSD students entering, advancing or transferring into 7th grade will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster immunization (Tdap) for school in the fall.  The requirement applies to all public and private schools.  Students new to the district in grades 7-12 must also provide proof of immunization before attending.

Students who do not show proof of receiving a Tdap booster shot after the age of 7 will not be able to start 7th grade until proof is provided to the school.  The tetanus-diphtheria booster shot, Td,will not meet the requirement.

The Tdap requirement affects all incoming 7th grade students in California.  If your child has not yet received the booster shot, avoid the back-to-school rush and get the vaccination now.  We encourage all children in the 6th grade to get the shot prior to the summer break to avoid a delay in receiving a class schedule.  Proof of this immunization needs to be taken to your child’s current school.
