April Bike Donation Drive

In April, 2012, VUSD and its community partners collected 117 donated bicycles that will be refurbished and passed out to kids who need them over the summer as part of the lunch program.

Request forms will be passed out door-to-door in neighborhoods that are serviced by the summer lunch trucks. Families can request bicycles and related gear, such as helmets and pumps by returning the forms to the lunch truck drivers.

Summer Lunch Program

Free Lunch Deliveries

Vacaville Unified School District Child Nutrition Department delivers lunches to select neighborhoods each summer as part of a national "Seamless Summer Feeding" program. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays from June 11 to Aug. 10, 2012, trucks will take nutritious lunches to children at 20 neighborhood sites.

The lunches are free and available to all children up to age 18.

"Hunger is one of the most severe roadblocks to the learning process," says the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which funds the Summer Nutrition Program. "Lack of nutrition during the summer months may set up a cycle for poor performance once school begins again. Hunger also may make children more prone to illness and other health issues. The Seamless Summer Feeding Option" is designed to fill that nutrition gap and make sure children can get the nutritious meals they need."

Nearly 40 percent of Vacaville's students -- more than 4,600 children -- qualified for free and reduced-price meals during the 2010-11 school year, according to the California Department of Education. That's a lot of potentially hungry children this summer, and one reason the school district decided to reach out.
